Nizlopi or X Factor? Christmas #1 in the UK

Tuesday December 20, 2005

In the U.S., Christmas is one of the slowest times of the year for activity on pop music charts. An assumption is made that the Christmas gifts are already purchased, radio is playing Christmas music, and most people have other things to focus on besides pop music. However, it is an entirely different picture across the Atlantic in the U.K. The battle for the #1 pop single the week of Christmas is one of the hottest pop culture competitions of the year.

A few weeks back there were many competitors for the honor. Westlife were putting final touches on a grand single with the legendary Diana Ross, Crazy Frog was plotting a return with his inimitable version of "Jingle Bells," and perennial competitor Robbie Williams was revving up with an Elvis Presley tribute. However, when the folk duo that could, Nizlopi, landed at the top of the singles chart this past week easily outselling the 3 records mentioned above, the picture abruptly changed.

Now it appears the competition is between Nizlopi's charming, utterly unique "The JCB Song" and the first single by the latest X Factor talent competition winner Shayne Ward. The suspense will be over when the charts are first announced on the BBC's Top of the Pops on Christmas Day this Sunday.

Listen to the competition and judge for yourself:

You know that if you want us to judge then make it so we can actually lick on Shayne. Poor lad. It just sends you to some rubbish JCB song. Anyway there is no need to judge. Shayne is better by far. He is a great singer with alot of potential, plus he is gooooooooorgeous!!

Hi Katie,

Thanks for the heads up. There was an editorial problem on my part…now the link for Shayne takes you straight to his site and an opportunity to watch his video.
