Arctic Monkeys Have Fastest Selling Debut Album Ever in U.K.

Monday January 30, 2006

It's official. The Arctic Monkeys' first album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is now the fastest selling debut album ever in the history of pop music in the U.K. The album sold over 360,000 copies in its first week of release easily surpassing the platinum mark of 300,000.

The previous record holder was the group Hear'Say, the first winners of the show Popstars. They sold 306,000 copies of their first album Popstars in its first week of release back in 2001.

U.S. release of the Arctic Monkeys' set is scheduled for February 21. Will they conquer America? Oasis, the last pop-rock band with something like the acclaim showered on the Arctic Monkeys, has never gone higher than #2 on the album chart and #8 on the pop singles chart in the U.S.
