Weekly Pop Music Blog Roundup

By May 7, 2006

Follow me on:

Just some random information from the blogosphere that never sleeps...

Apparently, when you work as a pop music journalist in the traditional press, you have to be careful about what you say elsewhere online as the St. Petersburg Times Gina Vivinetto found out.

Friday morning I reported on a 10-year-old girl prevented from singing Pink's "Dear Mr. President" at her school's talent show. It was the type of story tailor-made for discussion on blogs. Check out the commentary when The Daily Curmudgeon got hold of the story.

I knew Paris Bennett, the latest contestant tossed from American Idol, had some serious fans out there.

I know that the average pop music fan would rather have a root canal than read about and pay attention to the machinations of the business behind the scenes of their favorite artists and songs. However, the possibility of a EMI and Warner Music Group merger is a very important issue for the future of the music industry. If successful, it would whittle the music industry's Big 4 major record labels down to only 3.

Finally, some music to listen to this weekend. I'm sure all of you "Hips Don't Lie fans are now familiar with cumbia music from Colombia. Check out this cumbia remix of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy."

And for those of you who simply cannot wait any longer for new music from Outkast, a poor quality radio recording of new material courtesy Nah Right.
