Celebrating Pop Moms: Madonna

As a countdown to Mother's Day May 14th, I will be celebrating a pop mom, a pop music artist who also happens to be a mom, each day this week. Today's pop mom is Madonna.
Born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, the woman known simply as Madonna is one of the most successful pop singers of all time. In 2000, the Guinness Book of World Records named her as the most successful female recording artist ever. She has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide. She has released 6 #1 albums and 12 #1 pop singles in the U.S.
Madonna was first married in 1985 to actor Sean Penn. The relationship was a stormy one, and the pair were divorced in 1989. In 1994 Madonna met Carlos Leon who became her personal trainer and her lover. She gave birth to the couple's daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, in October, 1996. The couple's relationship ended after nearly 3 years of dating. In August, 2000, just days before her 42nd birthday, Madonna gave birth to a son, Rocco, by her then boyfriend, film director Guy Ritchie. Madonna and Ritchie were married that December. Today they live in London, England with both Lourdes and Rocco. Reportedly, Madonna maintains a good relationship with Lourdes' father, Carlos Leon.
As with every aspect of her life, press and paparazzi scrutinize every aspect available of Madonna's life as a parent. Recent reports are that she is a very strict disciplinarian, and she actively worries about balance between her career and being a good parent. During last fall's publicity blitz for her album Confessions on a Dance Floor, she said "It's a struggle to balance my career with my children. I'm always going, 'Oh God. I'm a crap mother.' I want to get home and put my kids to bed. Then sometimes, if I'm spending a lot of time with my children I think, 'Oh God. I just want to be an artist.' And, you know, it's hard."
Please join me in celebrating pop mom Madonna.
