Is Mika the Next Big Thing?

Friday January 12, 2007

Picked as the top new artist for 2007 in the BBC's annual poll (Corinne Bailey Rae was last year's pick), Lebanese-born Mika (pronounced Mee-ka) seems guaranteed to make a splash in his adopted country of the UK. However, will he cross the Atlantic to have the "big breakout" his label Universal Republic promotes in their press releases on the 22-year-old artist?

Listening to and watching Mika it's nearly impossible to not be reminded of Queen's late, phenomenally talented lead singer Freddie Mercury. However, as Mika himself proclaims, there are healthy doses of Beck and Elton John swirling about, too. Like all 3 of those talented performers, the sheer force of Mika's personality and projection of self-confidence is something to be reckoned with.

Check out the video for Mika's lead single "Grace Kelly" below, and let us know what you think. The single is already being pushed to radio and MTV here in the US, and look for the album in stores March 27, 2007, a little over a month after it goes on sale in the UK.

I can not even remember for sure how we discovered Mika. I was definetly thru the internet. This weekend we have had nothing but Mika’s songs in our house. My 10 and 6 years-old boys already know all the songs by memory. We order his Cd all the way from England. We don’t know Mika personally, but we already feel as if he has been around for lots of years. I am particular fond of his song Grace Kelly, because I has been very hard for me as a Venezuelan born and raised to fit in the American Culture. Most American are always expecting me to give away my roots, and culture in order to be acepted in their circles. I particularly love his “Love Today” song, specially since my 6 years-old is High Functioning Autistic and it has also been a challenge for people to understand the way that he is. I downloaded my 6 years-old dancing and pretending to sing Love Today on You Tube. It is amaizing to see him identifing with Mika’s son, and him learning his repetitive words, which are great because he has speach problems, but not with this song.
I am very proud of Mika for standing for what he believes, his messages are real, and down to earth. They are writen in a language we can easily identify with. His enthusiams for live is hair raiseng, and we sincerely has made him part of our family. My 9 year-old daughter, who happens to have a great voice, can sing exactly to Mika’s tune. French adoring family, and speaking it alittle we can appreciate Mika can speak both English and French. WE also hope he can sing his songs in Spanish. The whole world needs to hear from him, because he brings hope that the world can go back to be fun.
We wish him the best and he can count with us to support him. As I have read and seing all his interviews on You Tube, we understand some people may be thinking Mika is gay. We do not care what his sexual orientation is, we can see behond the unimportant, and see his heart, his maturity, and his youth. He can be blue, he can be purple, he can be anything he wants to. We only want the best for him, and to bring us more of him, more fun, more hope, more love, more of his truth, relities, and make us dance in the process.

I think it’s great he writes his own music. His is a very skilled pianist and writes unique music. It might have essence of other musicians there but it’s his own style. I love the sound of the piano in it, it is a funky electric style using piano to acomplish that! Hope the style doesn’t change with fame. Keep the piano in there.

Hi, I’m Carlota, I’m 13 years old and I’m from Portugal. At a time last year, my life was quite sad… then, I heard Mika. His hope, his persnality, his voice, made me realize how happy the world can be… he is ery original, and thats what I like about him… Please don’t say bad things about him, what if he’s gay? It doesn’t matter for us… Love Mika
