Melinda Doolittle - A Backup Singer Steps Forward on American Idol
It is still very early in the process for this year's American Idol, but as I was watching the usual parade of bizarre and unfortunate performances sprinkled with a few gems in last night's Memphis audition show, one of the gems sparkled particularly brightly. Although the aura of shyness was certainly in the room, the voice of professional backup singer Melinda Doolittle was clearly ready for prime time. A number of contestants in the past have attempted to tackle Stevie Wonder's classic "For Once In My Life" with varying degrees of success, but Melinda Doolittle fully owned the song in her performance.
Digging a little deeper Melinda Doolittle does indeed have a very successful career as a backup vocalist on recordings. She has recorded with Aaron Neville, CeCe Winans, and American Idol's own George Huff among many others. She is also a vocalist with the Music for the Soul Christian music ministry. Stepping forward out of the crowd is a big move for a singer who is familiar with relative anonymity. However, after hearing her sing in audition, let's hope Melinda Doolittle takes the spotlight for some time to come.

She should’ve won. American Idol is a joke. It has become a tv show for the teeny boppers. I’ll never watch it again.

This past week Melinda finally finished the vocals on her CD! All of that happens quickly then we will see her CD on shelves this Fall! Also, keep your eye out for her first official single that should be hitting airwaves in the coming weeks. Melinda is going to be throwing a lot of music at us in the coming months so get ready!

Produced by Grammy-nominated producer Mike Mangini (Joss Stone, Run DMC, The Jonas Brothers), Coming Back to You was recorded with a team of live musicians in Nashville and New York City.
The first single, “It’s Your Love” will be released to radio in October.
