American Idol - Melinda Doolittle Challenged By the Work of Pop Legends

Wednesday May 16, 2007

The judges and producers threw down the gauntlet last night for Melinda Doolittle and she continued to come through with flying colors turning in fantastic performances on one of the toughest evenings of this year's competition. When it comes down to the final 3, each contestant performs 3 songs. The first is chosen by the judges, the second by the show's producers, and the third is a song chosen by the contestant. In an evening of fine performances all around, Melinda Doolittle was given material that would have humbled all but the very best talents from the first 6 seasons of American Idol.

It is almost a running joke that Whitney Houston's vocal performances are so technically brilliant that attempting one of her songs in competition can be a foolish quest. However, in an effort to challenge the consummate professional of the competition, the judges handed Melinda Doolittle "I Believe in You and Me," a Whitney Houston classic from the soundtrack to The Preacher's Wife. Minutes of vocal acrobatics later, the judges were wowed as Melinda Doolittle proved herself more than up to the task of taking on Whitney.

After the producers tossed relative softballs of Donna Summer's "She Works Hard for the Money" and Maroon 5's "This Love" to Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis respectively, Melinda Doolittle was handed Tina Turner's autobiographical funk-rock classic "Nutbush City Limits." Channeling a mood diametrically opposed to a Whitney Houston love ballad, Melinda Doolittle let her inner Tina Turner loose and once again proved her tremendous talent. The final performance was a second reading of "I'm a Woman" causing us to forget yet another legendary performer, Peggy Lee, who is most associated with the song.

In a fascinating aside to last night's performances, both Jordin Sparks, choosing "I (Who Have Nothing)" and Melinda Doolittle, "I'm a Woman," elected to perform classic songs written by the legendary team of Leiber and Stoller. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are one of the most successful pop-rock songwriting teams of all time responsible for such classics as "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," and "Jailhouse Rock." They were elected to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Melinda Doolittle deserves to win American Idol, but with Idol the deserving one doesn’t alway win.

UNBELIEVABLE – Melinda deserved to win. American Idol voting is a farce. Fortunately, I know that Melinda will get her own contract and do considerably better than she would have by winning the contest. She is undisputably the best, most consistent vocalist this season, if not of all seasons. I am disappointed to see the least.

The show has obviously run it’s course…should have known it was a farce when “Punjab” or whatever his name was kept winning despite having no talent. And now, a no-talent whiny thin voiced “singer” who spends most of his time spitting into the microphone, and making sounds like IEDs going off in Iraq, is in the final? Melinda has more pure talent than anyone in the history of this show.

I have watch enough seasons to know the odds was against Melida when Simon said she should be in the Finals. My heart dropped when I heard that because I knew she was going to voted off. Unfortunately they cannot market her as they have previous winners except the velvet teddybear (I’m still in shock about him). Melinda, you are a true artist and professional and I am sure some producer will snatch you up. AIdol does not search for the best, they search for who they can make money on.
