Akon Turns Bad Behavior Into a Hit Song

Is there a sincere apology here? That is the primary question on the minds of many pop music fans as they listen to Akon's apology record "Sorry, Blame It On Me." The hot pop/r&b singer has been embroiled in controversy over the past several months mostly centering on onstage sexual antics with an underage fan in Trinidad and an incident where he allegedly threw a young fan from the stage into the audience while on tour with Gwen Stefani.

Akon clearly is a master of the instantly pleasing pop song. "Sorry, Blame It On Me" wraps its words in beautiful melody, but lyrically the song seems to cast as much blame on others as Akon takes on himself. He includes the lines such as "So I want to take this time out to apologize for things that I've done, things that haven't occurred yet, and things that they don't want to take responsibility for." The song also directly blames the young girl's parents and attacks Verizon, the Stefani tour sponsor, for "disgracing my name," Contrition seems somewhat absent from Akon's personal skill set. Whether or not pop music fans see the song as a sincere apology, plenty of listeners are interested in what Akon has to say. "Sorry, Blame It On Me" is sitting at the top of the iTunes digital download chart.

Head to Akon's official web site to hear "Sorry, Blame It On Me," and let us know what you think.

(1) Akon says:

Yo Bill,
After listening to the song, I think Akon addresses some very valid issues. The girls father attacked Akon and got his daughter to feign humiliation just to provide cover for his poor parenting. Just what was a 14 year old girl doing in a “18 & over” club. It’s hard to be contrite when someone keeps kicking you. At some point you are going to get up off your knees and defend yourself.

“almost not worth” must imply you think it still is worth the time. I’m happy to hear you start.
