Jason Castro Goes "Over the Rainbow" Hawaiian Style On American Idol

By now it would seem musicians, or the owners of their recordings, would be lining up at Jason Castro's door to convince him to perform their song on American Idol. A few weeks back he performed "Hallelujah," written by Leonard Cohen, and a definitive recording of it by the late Jeff Buckley sold over half a million digital copies. This week Castro's ukulele-based performance of "Over the Rainbow" has brought the recording that inspired it, the late Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version, into the top 15 in sales on iTunes in less than 24 hours.
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's recording of "Over the Rainbow" was originally released in 1993. It has become an accepted standard version of the classic song ranking with Judy Garland's original and Eva Cassidy's stunning arrangement. The acclaim from judges and fans that greeted Jason Castro's presentation is not only due to the popularity of the original record. His performance was picture perfect, and the arrangement fits Castro's image as an artist like a glove.

I agree with everything you wrote. Jason Castro does have that King Midas touch. He makes song sound so lovely and genuine. I think it’s because he is such a pure artist. Not flashy, not pompous, just beautiful heartfelt singing. It’s what music should be.
BTW, last time I checked, Iz’ version is now Number 8 on iTunes. The longer version (What A Wonderful World combo) is also fast climbing up the charts.
Thank you for this post. Love to know that so many people appreciate Jason’s performance in American Idol. I was moved to tears even before he finished singing the first line. That kid not only looks like an angel, he sounds like one, too.
That is a beautiful synopsis of Jason’s performance(s) and to me continues to cement the reasons why he has still held his position in the Idol competition. Jason “found” his voice only 2 yrs ago, but his ability to tap into his own natural talent, almost effortlessly, can appear to challenge even the most seasoned professional. Jason should always remain true to himself and not waiver. He will only grow as a more consummate artist day-by-day…
