David Cook Lights Up Online Sales After American Idol Win

Monday May 26, 2008

While he is no longer holding 4 of the top 5 spots on the iTunes digital sales chart, David Cook continues to post big numbers in download sales of his performances from American Idol. His 2 original songs from the show, "The Time of My Life" and "Dream Big," continue to hold down the #1 and #3 spots respectively. Cook's take on U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" also remains in the top 10 at a comparatively lofty #7. Look for an influx of David Cook performances later this week on the Billboard Pop 100.

David Cook's final competition, 17-year-old David Archuleta, is no slouch either. However, his highest chart placing is #22 for his performance of "In This Moment." It is followed at #23 by "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me." In all, 7 of the places in the ITunes top 40 are currently held by the two Davids, Cook and Archuleta.

I really enjoyed both David’s this year on AI. Not only were they great singers, but they both seemed to be genuinely nice people. I’m more into the music of David A, but I might even buy David C’s CD. Congrats to both of them. I hope they both have great music career!

All told, Cook’s sales reached 643,000 downloads this week so far. As Simon would say, Cook didn’t beat the competition, he crushed it, setting a single-week sales record that most artists could only dream of. Based on Amazon’s pre-sold copies of Analog Heart (when 19E re-releases it), Cook may beat his own record. He has us all wanting more.
