Susan Boyle Expected to Join 'Britain's Got Talent' Tour

Follow me on:

Many fans held their breath when singing sensation Susan Boyle checked into a mental health clinic following her loss on this year's Britain's Got Talent finale. However, she checked out of the clinic last Friday and said, "I feel bloody fantastic." Preparations are now underway for Boyle to join the Britain's Got Talent concert tour. She may miss the first few shows, but earlier reports speculated on whether she would miss the tour entirely.

Susan Boyle will have 24-hour access to physician Dr. Sarah Lotzof in case any new problems should crop up. Reportedly, Boyle spent the weekend at home with her pet cat Pebbles. The concert tour begins this Friday in Birmingham, England.

I can’t help but worry about the tour and the future for Susan, as it seems she needs constant availability of a doctor, special considerations for her (emotional?) health, and could use some advice on professional conduct (i.e. no more impromptu strip teases or comical poses for the cameras, all very cringe-able things to watch). The BGT TV show already portrayed her as a figure of ridicule in order to play up the “surprise” contrast of her ability to sing, a strategy for ratings that was exploitive and even cruel. (The emotional effect of that you-tube video that careened around the world was made possible by a very demeaning initial portrait of Susan, when comical music played during her entrance and the judges rolled their eyes — all of it staged, for maximum effect).

Given, this apparent fragility, and uncertainty about her ability to perform, will Susan be able to launch a professional and consistent career? I wish she would ditch the tour, which is connected to the show that exploited her, and get some coaching and preparation for a new beginning and (professional) image. She doesn’t have to rush into anything, and confidence in her stability would serve her well.

I read thoughtful comments here. I too am quite concerned about this incredibly talented woman who has lived a simple and quiet life – now on the world’s stage – and seems not well equipped to handle it.
I see her as a fragile bottle of precious energy and talent – that was given SO beautifully to her voice and music– but now is being squandered before the press and adoring fans — a total waste of her energy.
We only have so much energy to give – and she is not doing well in directing her lovely life energy to her voice – her real beauty and talent. I dearly hope those ‘handlers’ around her can help her come to grips with this fact – or I am doubtful she in fact will live her dream!
