Michael Jackson Dominates Online Music Sales

Friday June 26, 2009

It's hard to imagine a more total domination of music sales by a recording artist. However, in the wake of his untimely death, Michael Jackson, one of the top pop stars of all time, is absolutely dominant in online music sales. At iTunes in the US at the time of the writing of this piece, Michael Jackson owned 24 of the top 50 songs currently selling. This included the highest ranking songs, "Man In the Mirror" at #2, "Thriller" at #4, and "The Way You Make Me Feel" at #5. His ownership of the album sales chart was even more striking. Starting with The Essential Michael Jackson at #1, nine of the top 10 albums were related to Michael Jackson. The sole hold out in the top 10 was the Black Eyed Peas' album The E.N.D..

In the UK on iTunes the story is much the same. Only 13 of the top 50 songs are related to Michael Jackson with only "Man In the Mirror" in the top 10 at #8. However, domination of the album chart is exactly the same. Nine of the top 10 albums are related to Michael Jackson. The chart is lead by Number Ones at the top. In the UK the sole non-Michael Jackson hold out is Lady GaGa and her album The Fame.

The Amazon music store tells the story once again. 24 of the top 50 digital download songs at Amazon are Michael Jackson related. This time they are led by "Thriller" at #2, "Man In the Mirror" at #3, and "Billie Jean" at #4. Over on the album chart is an unbelievable story. The top 15 albums currently at Amazon are Michael Jackson related. This group is led by Thriller 25.

This story will undoubtedly change in the next few days to come. However, for now, the world mourns through the purchase of music from the phenomenal catalog of Michael Jackson.

Its only fitting that his memory be honored by listening to his music. The man left a brilliant legacy of work that will be appreciated by many future generations. A piece of the 80’s has died a true legend. The world will never again see his like.

It’s not all that surprising really, I was one of those people that bought an album online. I guess it was about time I bought one album, despite knowing quite a few songs of his for a long, long time. At least he has now found the peace that so eluded him in life.
