She only released three studio albums but all three have been certified double platinum. She reached the top 10 on the pop singles chart four times. Perhaps her greatest chart triumph was being the first artist to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the single "Try Again," with only radio airplay numbers. At the age of 22, Aaliyah was one of the most promising young artists in pop music, both commercially and artistically, when a plane she was riding in went down in the Bahamas killing all on board eight years ago today, August 25, 2001.
Artistically, one of Aaliyah's greatest legacies may be in helping introduce the production work of Timbaland to a wide audience through his work on her 1996 album One In a Million. She was not only a top singer, she had begun branching out into acting with starring roles in the films Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned. Her voice is one that is still sorely missed, but we have her legacy of recorded music to remember Aaliyah by.
