Google Music Search Service to Launch
Google plans to become a factor in music retailing beginning next Wednesday, October 28, 2009. That is the date for the launch of a new music specific search service Google is creating. There is no name for it yet, but some that have been tossed around include One Box and Google Music. The company is hosting an event for the launch at Capitol Records headquarters in Hollywood, California with the band OneRepublic as musical guests.
This new service is expected to respond to searches for artists or songs by delivering a box that will provide free streams of music and an option to purchase. Google is working with the services LaLa and iLike to provide the streaming options. The search service will include music from all four major labels as well as signficant indie content. Google has remained fairly tight-lipped on details of the service. However, it is also expected this is just the first in a line of Google products that will link to retail purchase options.
