Artist in the Wings - Barcelona
I was fortunate recently to catch the self-described "little band from Seattle," Barcelona, in concert. Their music is lush, longing pop-rock influenced by the likes of mainstream bands Coldplay and U2 as well as alt favorites Death Cab for Cutie. However, it would be a mistake to describe Barcelona as derivative. They produce an atmosphere all their own centered on the throaty lead vocals of Brian Fennell. He has referred to the band's music as "piano rock."
In concert the band happily engage and play to their audience even leading a singalong with a crowd mostly hearing the group for the first time. The band's first, self-released album Absolutes was re-released this past spring when Barcelona was signed to a major label contract with Universal Motown. The show Grey's Anatomy featured Barcelona's song "Falling Out of Trees" in promotions for the show's finale last spring. Do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to the expansive pop-rock of Barcelona.
