This may qualify as my first big pop music surprise of the new year. It has been 10 years since Canada's Barenaked Ladies last made a major dent on the US pop singles chart with "Pinch Me." Recent years have been difficult for the band with personal issues and changes in management. Most recently co-founding member Steven Page left the band. Barenaked Ladies are now recording as a four piece. However, if the new song "You Run Away" is an indication, all of the turmoil has been an outstanding catalyst for quality music from the group. The new song is instantly memorable in the fashion of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars." Listen and keep a close watch. With the right breaks, we just might see Barenaked Ladies in year end lists for 2010. The 11th studio album for the group All in Good Time is set to hit stores March 30, 2010.

Unfortunately, “You Run Away” has the same huge handicap as most recent BNL singles: Ed Robertson’s unimpressive voice.

Much as I love Steve’s voice, Ed’s always slightly edged it out for me.
