Charice Aims for Mainstream Pop Success on "Pyramid" Duet With Iyaz

By , About.com GuideMarch 29, 2010

Follow me on:

17 year old singer Charice of the Philippines first gained major recognition in the US through multiple appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show. A song "Note to God" was released as a digital download and it climbed to #44 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now a first international full-length album is slated for release in May 2010. The opening single from this collection is "Pyramid" and features a guest vocal from rising Caribbean star Iyaz. The song has already reached the top 15 on the US dance chart. Now "Pyramid" has headed out to mainstream pop radio. Will this be the song that makes Charice a pop star in the US? There is a distinct relationship in sound to recent music from Jordin Sparks. Check out the "Pyramid" video below and let us know your opinion.

(5) may stewart says:

She is simple THE BEST SINGER in her generation. Name me a singer who can belt side by side Celine Dion, sing pop and rnb and even sing opera with Bocelli. There is only one singer who can do this and her name is CHARICE.

I am betting that 2010 will be her breakout year. This little one is so talented and special and cannot be ignored.

(7) nikki says:

Charice is a WOWER! A very good entertainer and a total performer! She is the only singer that has given me chicken skin/goosebumps…no one else. I do not know, I can’t explain…there is something in her voice that can make an old man and grown-ups cry. Is it magic? NO! It is real and pure talent. She is gifted with tremendous talent. She got an amazing voice and powerful vocals that she can deliver the song perfectly and effortlessly the fact that she has no formal voice training lesson when she started singing. Though pint sized, she is a complete package, she is a joy to watch and I named her “Miss Standing Ovation”.

I think PYRAMID is awesome!! She has already been dubbed the “New Pop Princess” by the NY Post and an “Artist to Watch in 2010″ by FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback). This is just the begining for the little one with HUGE talent. GO!GO! GO! CHARICE!

Charice is versatile and very talented artist. With her wide vocal range, she sings to caress your soul. I have never been so touched by any other artist the way she does, goosebumps and tears galore! She is beyond amazing. PYRAMID as her career single will appeal to younger people coz of its cool message and nice tune. Older fan like me can still appreciate it coz of her crystal like and magical voice. Charice to the top baby!

(15) Anthony says:

The first time I saw Charice perform was in YouTube when she was 13 singing Whitney’s I Will Always Love You and Celine’s To Love You More. I was blown away! I cannot described how such a small body can belt out and sing grown up songs like the one mentioned! I was hooked!Jordin Sparks is a good singer but Charice can sing anything! Charice’s voice is so powerful and so versatile. The best of its kind. Search for her videos in YouTube and you are going to be hypnotized! No turning back!

March 30, 2010 at 12:04 pm
(16) Danny says:

No disrespect to Jordin Sparks, she is a good singer, however her vocal is not as versatile, and sometimes she screams in her song. Charice delivers all of her songs with emotion and connection, and with big stage presence without pretention. Her interpretation of Note to God was mind blowing, and now this new song Pyramid shows her wide range of talent. To the top Charice!

(19) muchmusic says:

who would think that this little girl who dream just to sing on stage and become popular in her own country become an international star she is an inspiration to everyone when i was her age i didn’t have the kind of courage perseverance and hardwork she have and she seems to be fearless as soon as she enter the stage she is one of the living proof that big dreams comes true

March 30, 2010 at 7:55 pm
(20) Thomas Norm says:

Most artists come and go. This girl, Charice, as Ellen put it, “I can smell a star.” David Foster proclaimed after her powerful rendition of the Bodyguard medley in Las Vegas at his DF & Friends Concert, “A Star is born.” Oprah proclaimed after hearing her sang in her show, “The most talented kid in the world.” She sang with Celine at MSG in NYC and Andrea Bocelli in Tuscany, Italy. She got standing ovations in all her performances. Her producers made a strategic decision to pair her with Iyaz and sing an RnB to mainstream into the 12-30 year old demographic group.

Charice’s ability to cross genres, make dramatic improvement with her communications skills in less than three years, and work the stage well to fit her act tell a lot about her as a performer. Her voice is the “it” that sets her apart from ther rest. She seems to understand how Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Madonna have used product imagery and marketing (through technolgy this time)to create a brand for her. Likewise, she understands how important to continue showcasing her great vocals like Celine, Whitney and Christina in retaining the divaesque stature and legacy.

March 30, 2010 at 10:14 pm
(21) donnie says:

great song…this girl is gonna go places….she’s a diva in the making….

March 31, 2010 at 3:34 pm
(22) chakyun says:

Jordin Spark is a good singer but Charice is a better singer. Both of them performed in the Skate for the Heart just recently. Majority of people can see the difference between the two, Charice performed without back-up and she makes her mark while Jordin Sparks needs a whole band and back-up singers to make her songs spicy and you can´t even hear her singing. But we cannot deny that “Americal Idol” helps her popularity to rise.

April 2, 2010 at 10:31 am
(29) Steve says:

There are so many things going for this girl that it’s undeniable – as David Foster has mentioned so many times. The fact that it took more than a year for WB to prepare the release of her album – all original songs, written and arranged for her – shows how serious her management team is about bringing Charice out properly to the world.

Truly, one of the best vocalist out there, right now.

April 2, 2010 at 11:03 am
(30) cardcrusher says:

“Pyramid” won’t be the song that will propel Charice to mainstream America. First, it’s too generic. Secondly, it comes across as a song that Jojo would have done in 2005.

The comparison to Jordin Sparks is not as strong as the comparison to Jojo. Unlike, Jordin and Jojo, Charice just lacks that factor that appeal to younger people. Jojo and Jordin also have catchy songs while Charice’s “Pyramid” is mildly catchy at best.

(34) muskrat says:

I hate it when people compare then bring down a singer in favor of their personal preferences, but that is show business, they will always going to be compared. Charice is one of a kind and she will only get better through the years, she’s only 17 so she will be up there with the best for years to come and she’s undeniable. A multi talented singer with tremendous vocal range, her high or low notes will simply blow you away. She can sing Whitney, Celine songs with ease then go RNB, RAP, never seen anything like her. Go Charice, all the way to the top baby.

Hmm, even ONTDers are commenting on how much “Pyramid” resembles a Jojo song. And ONTDers are not the types to be easily impressed.

Just beware that some Charice fans have been known to commit sock puppetry when promoting her. I have proof (with screenshots and links) that they leave multiple messages under different names, and worse, it’s condoned by some.

I can see the Christina Aguilera formula on Charice

- abandoned by father
- loves whitney and celine
- loves to belt on the top of their lungs.
- and has a very dramatic life
- they both stated at 6 on venturing the music industry

I just hope that she’ll not gonna get dirty after this album.

(53) SV says:

Every song on the album is just amazingly well-written and composed. Kudos to David Foster and everyone else who worked on the album! I thought I was the only one who was getting all choked up every time I hear her sing. I can really feel that she means every word when she sings it. I play her CD on a loop and I can’t seem to get tired.

May 27, 2010 at 3:26 pm
(54) cardcrusher says:

It looks like “Pyramid” and Charice’s album is a flop. The single is on 93 on the Hot 100 after debuting at 56, and it’s likely to be gone from the chart next week. The album is now 28th on the Billboard 200 while debuting at number 8. At worst, the album could be gone off that chart by the 4th week.

The album is just too generic to gain any significant buzz.

(55) starbuck246 says:

Before everyone blasts cardcrusher as a troll, step back and at least consider for a second that he may be the voice of reason among the crowd of over the top adoring fans? I’m not a supporter of his comments, but take it easy folks. Don’t forget that Charice just turned 18 and has come a long way very quickly. Not just from performing in small town venues, but also performance-wise. If you compare her singing and performances now to those just two years ago, you can’t fail to notice a huge improvement in all areas. Her English has also made huge strides; I’m sure she will soon be able to give those sophisticated “grown up” answers to interview questions that some posters wish she’d give now. All and all, I’m a recent fan of Charice and have as many others lost much sleep watching and searching for Youtube vids of her. However, I really hope everyone lets her grow up at her own pace. Two of the personal characteristics that draw fans to her is her natural humility and kindness will be sure to keep grounded. Also she seems to have the natural instinct to fearlessly try and work on new things and not worry about being perfect right away, and she is not afraid to share that process with her fans — and detractors. She really is a breath of fresh air.

(62) cardcrusher says:

Judging from the charts, Charice fails to reach mainstream pop success. “Pyramid” only charted for two weeks on the Hot 100, and it’s gone quite possibly forever. To Charice’s credit, her album hasn’t disappeared completely from the Billboard 200.

@Jerry
What “discriminatory” comment are you referring to? Here I am making a comment about the (boring and generic) music of Charice, and you bring up the race card. Why are you trying to censor the thoughts expressed here? People are free to have their own opinions. Your dislike of some opinions won’t prevent them from being expressed.

June 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm
(65) cardcrusher says:

@ Jerry
You still haven’t pointed out where those “discriminatory remarks” you accuse me of making. How can I be a “racist” when I haven’t scrutinized Charice on racial terms. On the other hand, you are the one that sees racism where there is none.

Going back to music related stuff, Charice will be forgotten sooner than most people think. She lacks the “IT” factor and has no fanbase apart from Fil-Ams. Compare that to successful American musicians with Asian backgrounds: Nicole S of the PCD, Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas, Mike Shinoda and Mr Hahn of Linkin Park. Damn, even the British Jay Sean who is ethnically South Asian has a diverse fanbase in the US that is not based on supporting “one of us”

(66) jerry says:

you know what cardcrusher, stick this to your tiny brain, you can say all the derogatory remarks you want to say and do what ever you want, “we dont care and we will not stop on adoring charice, she’s the greatest that ever happen in america” and whatever you do, you can never put a good man down.

(68) cardcrusher says:

@Jerry
You keep accusing me of making “discriminatory” and “derogatory” comments, yet you can’t point out specific examples where I make them on the comment section here.

You also need to read the comments that you’ve written. You are the one that is making derogatory comments while I have yet to create one here.

I notice that you have no reply to my point about successful American artists with Asian ancestry. Is it because that point debunks your point about my “racism”?

June 15, 2010 at 8:04 am
(69) cardcrusher says:

“we dont care and we will not stop on adoring charice, she’s the greatest that ever happen in america”

@Jerry
Please stop drinking the Kool Aid. What you wrote is nonsense. How can she be the greatest even if it’s just limited to the context of music? Her album is a flop, and it’s sinking quite fast. Her “Pyramid” is also a flop. Most radio stations ignored it, and it had no staying power on the Hot 100. Your use of “we” on the comment above is highly suspect since not a lot people bought her album.

Charice’s album just fell off the Billboard 200. So you were saying that Charice will conquer American and stay on top?Her single only managed to chart on the Hot 100 for two weeks before disappearing quite possibly forever.
