American Idol Lowers Minimum Age to 15 - The Justin Bieber Effect?

By June 22, 2010

Despite the fact that only one teenager, Jordin Sparks, has actually won American Idol, producers announced yesterday that they have decided to lower the minimum age for contestants from 16 to 15. It doesn't seem that viewers are just clamoring for younger teenage contestants to make it into the competition. However, Justin Bieber was only 15 when his career began taking off last year. If someone like him had chosen to audition for American Idol, they would not be allowed due to the 16 age limit. So...are we likely to see more stunning young talent than before due to the younger contestants allowed in? Next season will tell us.

Meanwhile, the search for a replacement judge for Simon Cowell continues. Auditions in front of judges are not scheduled to begin until this September. It is unclear whether a new judge will be in place or if American Idol will temporarily employ guest celebrity judges like last season after the departure of Paula Abdul.
