Backed up by a confirming statement on his official web site, the news has broken that last year's X Factor winner, 19 year old Joe McElderry, is gay. The message itself reveals a great deal of maturity in handling what could have become a major tabloid sensation. As has become tradition, Joe McElderry topped the UK pop singles chart with his first release, a cover of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb." He reached the top spot despite the successful efforts to keep him out of #1 for a week while punk band Rage Against the Machine stole the spot. Joe McElderry completed the annual X Factor finalists tour in April. His debut album is expected in stores October 25, 2010. Among the producers on the project are John Shanks and R&B veteran Dallas Austin.
