The Recording Academy announced yesterday that pop and rock legend Bruce Springsteen will be honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year in celebrations that take place during Grammy week. He is receiving the honor both in recognition of his musical accomplishments and his support through the years for philanthropic projects. MusiCares is a charitable arm of the Recording Academy, the organization that gives out the Grammy Awards, that supports musicians that are suffering through difficult times. Bruce Springsteen is a winner of 20 Grammy Awards. Recording Academy president Neal Portnow said, "Bruce Springsteen is a truly gifted and Renaissance artist of our time, a national treasure, and an exemplary humanitarian. His career is a testament to the power of creative excellence, and his contributions as a philanthropist speak to the tenacity of the human spirit."
Bruce Springsteen has hit the top 10 on the album chart 17 times, and 10 of those have gone all the way to #1. He has accomplished a rare feat of having at least one studio, live, and greatest hits album go to #1 on the album chart. 18 of Bruce Springsteen's singles have reached the pop top 40. 12 of those have reached the top 10. It is estimated that he has sold over 120 million records worldwide.
