Just a few short years ago no one would have predicted that a folk-oriented rock band would release the fastest selling album of the year so far. However, no one really expected a band like the UK's Mumford and Sons would emerge. Their debut album Sigh No More captured the hearts of alternative and rock music fans both at home and in the US. It went to #2 on the album chart in both countries and was certified multi-platinum in both.
However, that success was still not quite enough to predict the phenomenal opening sales success of the new album Babel. Preceded by the single "I Will Wait," the album has already reached #1 this past weekend on the UK album chart. The sales total of 159,000 copies is the largest opening total for an album yet in 2012. Here in the US Babel is expected to have moved in the range of 600,000 copies when the totals are announced on Wednesday. That would give it the largest opening week total of 2012 on these shores. Mumford and Sons' first album Sigh No More generated six Grammy Award nominations, but it was not nominated for Album of the Year. Babel must be considered a favorite for an Album of the Year nomination this year. Check out the group performing their single "I Will Wait" and celebrate one of the world's top groups in popular music.
