Adele's 21 Is the Top Selling Album Of the Year For the Second Year In a Row

For the first time since SoundScan began digital tracking of album sales in 1991, one album claims the title of bestselling album for two years in a row. Adele's landmark 21 album led sales in 2011 with 5.82 million copies sold and led again in 2012 with another 4.41 million sold. Boy band One Direction also set a new record. They are the first act to have two albums place in the top five of the year since 1991. Overall album sales were down 4% but the album market seems to have settled in the past two years after several years of free fall.
