Folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens took the stage to open the landmark Woodstock Festival in August 1969 and became a popular music legend. He passed away this morning from a sudden heart attack. Richie Havens performed a nearly three hour set at Woodstock and became known to music fans around the world. Two years later in 1971 his cover version of the Beatles' classic "Here Comes the Sun" climbed to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped his album Alarm Clock reached the top 30. Richie Havens never again climbed high into the pop charts, but he continued to tour and perform live until retiring just over a year ago. In addition to his music, Richie Havens also ventured into acting with performances in the original 1972 stage production of the Who's rock opera Tommy, and he also appeared in Richard Pryor's 1977 film Greased Lightning.
