Billy Joel and Carlos Santana Will Receive Kennedy Center Honors

The Kennedy Center Honors are one of the highest cultural awards that can be bestowed in the US. This year's deserving winners are pop legend Billy Joel, rock guitarist Carlos Santana, jazz master Herbie Hancock, actress Shirley MacLaine and opera singer Martina Arroyo. Billy Joel will join a select group of pop musicians receiving the award including Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, and Neil Diamond. The winners will be celebrated in a gala performance December 8, 2013 at Washington DC's Kennedy Center. The event will be broadcast on CBS TV December 29, 2013.

64 year old Billy Joel is one of the best selling recording artists of all time. He is credited with selling over 150 million records and has won 23 Grammy Awards. Billy Joel is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and Songwriters Hall Of Fame. 12 of his songs have reached the pop top 10 in the US. 11 of his albums hit the top 10 and four have been #1 hits. The double album Greatest Hits Volume I & II is one of the bestselling albums of all time in the US and has been certified 23 times platinum.

Mexican-American Carlos Santana is one of the top rock guitarists of all time. With his group Santana he recorded "Smooth" featuring Rob Thomas, one of the biggest pop hit singles of all time. Carlos Santana has won 10 Grammy Awards, and he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. 12 Santana albums have reached the top 10 on the album chart including the 15 times platinum Supernatural.
