48th Annual Grammy Awards Wrap Up

Thursday February 9, 2006

U2 took home the most citations - 5 - including Album and Song of the Year. Neither Mariah Carey nor Kanye West went home empty-handed, but they will have to wait for another year to dominate the awards. Don't miss the complete list of pop, rock, and r&b winners, and please indulge me in a brief list of my own citations for the evening:

  • American Idol? award: Kelly Clarkson - She didn't mention AI in her acceptance speeches, and it all seems so long ago now in her career.
  • Best dressed award: No one could touch Alicia Keys.
  • Emotional performance award: Mary J. Blige really should perform every year at the awards. U2 tore through "Vertigo" before duetting with Blige on "One" and Mary J. managed to steal the moment.
  • Entertainers of the night award: Kanye West and Jamie Foxx - The marching band competition version of "Gold Digger" was unique and seriously fun. He may have an ego, but he is an amazing musician and entertainer.
  • Gracious winner award: Bono's heartfelt tributes to the other nominees for Album of the Year is a model for all winners to follow.
  • Most surprising moment of the night award: I thought this would be Sly Stone appearing at the end of his tribute, but then seeing Paul McCartney warbling "Yesterday" next to Jay-Z wearing a John Lennon t-shirt under his shirt made the jaw drop to the floor.
  • "Now I know who he is" award: John Legend - If you didn't know before tonight, you certainly know now. He is a truly deserving Best New Artist.
  • Rock performance of the night award: Paul McCartney - His current song "Fine Line" is cute and fun, but pulling out "Helter Skelter" reminded us all he has always been the Beatle who could really rock.
  • Shock of the night award: Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was as shocked as everyone else when "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" defeated Kanye, Mariah, and Gwen for Record of the Year.
