Advance word on this 5th studio album from guitarist, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson indicated his songs would reflect a darker tone, particularly in response to the death of his cousin Danny Riley. This is true occasionally in the lyrics, but the overall feel is of another set of gentle, comforting tunes designed to help lighten your daily burden and put everything in a realistic perspective. Jack Johnson fans will find this another solid collection from their favorite ex-surf champion, but others may fail to be impressed.

Lyrical Brushes With the World Condition

Jack Johnson kicks off Sleep Through the Static by letting us know there are some big issues and serious concerns on his mind. "All At Once" uses dark keyboard sounds to underline words of feeling overwhelmed by world conditions and a sense of loss of control. "Sleep Through the Static" is a meditation on the Iraq War lightened by a bouncy musical tone. There is seriousness in these grooves, but Johnson's voice never aims to cut or alarm. It's as if he is reassuring listeners he does think deeply, but he won't allow these concerns to throw him off course.

A Slight Shift in the Electric Direction

There is certainly more electric guitar here than in the past, but don't look for any fiery rock pyrotechnics on a Jack Johnson record. As always, the supporting musicians are tightly reined in delivering the songs with polish, but sometimes seeming to lack a bit in soul. The best musical moments occur when the arrangement is stripped to its most basic elements such as on the quietly disarming "Enemy" or the pleasingly intimate "Angel."

Brighten Your Waning Winter Days

When Jack Johnson is at his best, his comforting voice and warm, understated guitar playing can brighten your day and lift your emotions. This is a welcome gift as the last days of winter arrive and you begin to wish for spring. File this album next to Colbie Caillat's Coco for those days when you just need a little lift.
