With FutureSex / LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake puts to rest any concerns about a sophomore slump. The album is an effective blend of pop, hip hop, dance, and r&b music that does indeed sound futuristic. With his production partner Timbaland, Justin Timberlake captures influences from 1999-era Prince to snap and welds them into a pop fusion that is both cerebral and catchy.
Breaking Things Down...and Putting Them Back Together
The image on the cover of FutureSex / LoveSounds showing Justin Timberlake smashing a disco ball is an effective metaphor for what is happening on much of this album. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland continually borrow elements from the past, weld them to skittering beats and an irresistible pop melody creating a danceable sound that leaves conventional disco and dance music in the dust.
Source material comes from all over the musical map. 1999-era Prince, Michael Jackson's falsetto ballad singing, and snap grooves are just a few of the elements that are echoed in this potent pop fusion. Making it all work are Timbaland's endless supply of beats and Justin Timberlake's unerring instincts as a pop vocalist.
Covering the Bases
FutureSex / LoveSounds covers a wide range in musical moods. The album kicks off with its title track followed by the hit "SexyBack" cloaked in the now familiar hard beats and distorted vocals. Elsewhere, Justin is lovestruck in the masterful second single "My Love" fueled by classic, idiosyncratic beats and toy sounds from Timbaland. Nearing the end of the album, Justin Timberlake even finds time to touch on his boyband past in "Summer Love" and deliver an effective anti-drug warning on "Losing My Way." Wrapping things up is a stripped down piano ballad produced by the legendary Rick Rubin that showcases Justin's skills as a vocalist.

One of the Top Albums of the Year
Pop music fans are blessed in the fall of 2006. After an extended spell lacking in high-quality major pop releases, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and Justin Timberlake have all stepped into the gap with the best albums of their young careers. FutureSex / Love Sounds has already produced a #1 pop single, "SexyBack," and a second single "My Love" is swiftly climbing the charts. Look for this album to have legs well into the Christmas 2006 market.
