On her second album It's Not Me, It's You, witty singer-songwriter Lily Allen shows that she has done some living since her first album Alright, Still. Autobiographical songs reveal grown-up feelings, but it's not at the expense of wit and fun. The pointed "F*ck You" proves she has a perky, bouncy way of redressing wrongs that will leave you feeling both vindicated and amused. She may be only 23, but here Lily Allen demonstrates a mature understanding of life animating her consistently clever, well-written songs.

Personal Songs Show a Deeper Side

It's Not Me, It's You kicks off with the song "Everyone's At It" laying bare contradictions in the attempt to fight the negative effects of drugs. From this point we know we are in new territory with this second collection of songs from Lily Allen. The hit single "The Fear" reflects on the impact of celebrity and success. "I Could Say" clearly depicts the positives in the end of a bad relationship, but with lines like "And now I've come to realize there's nothing cool about you at all," it's obvious pain was involved as well.

Humor Helps the Point Sink In

Even though she is singing about intense feelings and painful life experience, Lily Allen continues to demonstrate the power of humor in communication. The light music hall feel of "F*ck You" will insure that it's message of fighting bigots and hatemongers will sink in quickly. The litany of ironies in "22" is introduced with a peppy, finger-snapping beat. On "Him," Lily Allen muses about what God might be like. She suggests that perhaps his favorite band is Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Lily Allen Shares Her Distinctive Point Of View With Wit and Style

For some listeners Lily Allen's mockney accent and thin, little girl singing style can get a bit tiring over the entire length of an album. However, varied instrumentation and rhythms help maintain attention from song to song. It is in lyrics and her intimate style that Allen truly excels. If you want a clear window into the world of a witty, young woman suddenly thrust headlong into fame and celebrity, this is your album. It's Not Me, It's You slides into the consciousness with a lightness that belies the all too real feelings underneath. Lily Allen's voice is one that rewards careful listening.
