Top 10 Pop Music Divas

The dictionary defines 'diva' as simply goddess. All of these women qualify as pop music goddesses. In the spirit of Ancient Greek and Roman goddesses, all of them could easily go by simply a single name, and we would know who they are. Some of them frequently do go by a single name. Without delay, here are the top 10 pop music divas of all time listed in alphabetical order.

1) Beyonce

Beyonce has moved well beyond simply being part of the group Destiny's Child and is a major music and movie star on her own. She has created the model for female superstar of the twenty-first century.

2) Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey dominated the pop music charts in the 1990's with 15 #1 hit pop singles. She seemed to hit a career bottom shortly after, but has returned with an amazing comeback.

3) Cher

Whether it's movies, tv, music, or even late night infomercials, Cher has been a star for 40 years. She spent years on a multi-year farewell tour and consequently has been seen live by more people than almost any other recording artist.

4) Celine Dion

Celine's golden voice has been ever-present for the last decade or so. Growing up as the youngest child in a family of 14, she figured out a way to stand out.

5) Whitney Houston

Whitney's voice is one of the most powerful and beautiful in the history of pop music. Unfortunately, her myriad personal issues have drawn nearly as much press.

6) Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson has come a long, long way from the status of being referred to as Michael Jackson's little sister. Now simply referred to as 'Janet,' like her older brother, she is no stranger to controversy.

7) Madonna

Madonna is simply one of the most successful pop music artists of all time. While courting controversy and starring in movie flops, her music has rarely suffered.

8) Diana Ross

Without Diana, there would be no Mariah or Beyonce. With her group the Supremes and later on her own, Diana Ross set a lofty standard for divas to come.

9) Barbra Streisand

Barbra began her career in the spotlight on the Broadway stage. She has since been a major movie star as well as pop star. Her performance in as Mrs. Focker in Meet the Fockers stole the show.

10) Donna Summer

When disco ruled, Donna was the undisputed queen. She continues to churn out dance hits and tour to adoring audiences.
