Christina Aguilera's Early Life:

Although she was born in New York, Christina Aguilera grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Her father is of Ecuadoran descent and her mother is of European descent. Aguilera's parents divorced before she was 10, and Christina moved in with her grandmother. Christina Aguilera had a precocious talent for singing. She competed in the television show Star Search in 1990 at age 9. She did not win, but became somewhat of a local celebrity.

Member of the New Mickey Mouse Club:

In 1993 Christina Aguilera was hired as a member of the Disney Channel's New Mickey Mouse Club. Among her fellow Mousketeers were Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and JC Chasez. The show ended in 1994, but it did provide national exposure. Christina Aguilera set about recording demos and submitting them in hope of a recording contract.

Teen Pop Star:

A significant opportunity came the way of Christina Aguilera in 1998 when she was hired to sing the song "Reflections" for the soundtrack to the animated movie Mulan. It was a minor hit that gained her a contract to record an album. "Genie in a Bottle," the first single from the album, went all the way to #1 on the pop singles chart in 1999. Her self-titled album also went to #1 and sold 8 million copies, buoyed by 2 more #1 hit songs.

Christina Aguilera released Mi Reflejo, a successful Spanish-language Latin pop album in 2000. In 2001 she collaborated with Mya, Pink, and Lil' Kim on a smash #1 pop remake of "Lady Marmalade" for the film Moulin Rouge. A second English-language album was finally released in the fall of 2002. Titled Stripped it was intended to present a more adult version of Christina Aguilera. Unfortunately, it only reached #2 on the charts and sales were half that of her first album.

Married and Back to Basics:

In support of the album Stripped, Christina Aguilera performed on a well-received concert tour sharing the spotlight with Justin Timberlake. She co-wrote Kelly Clarkson's hit song "Miss Independent," and in 2003 gained notoriety sharing an onstage kiss with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards.

While her fans waited impatiently for a new Christina Aguilera album, she appeared on 2 new singles in 2004. The first was a remake of "Car Wash" with Missy Elliott and the second was "Tilt Ya Head Back" with Nelly. Both were only minor pop hits. Her next recorded appearance was providing guest vocals on Herbie Hancock's 2005 album Possibilities. Their collaboration on "A Song for You" later received a Grammy Award nomination.

On November 19, 2005, Christina Aguilera married pop music executive Jordan Bratman. The traditional wedding received positive coverage in the celebrity press.

In the spring of 2006 Christina Aguilera announced that a new album Back to Basics was on its way with an intended August, 2006 release. "Ain't No Other Man," the first single from the album, was be debuted at the MTV Movie Awards on June 8, 2006. It returned her to the pop top 10 over the summer and set the scene for an August release of Back to Basics.
