Before becoming a contestant on The X Factor, Shayne Ward performed in the band Destiny with Tracy Murphy and Tracey Lyle. He also finished among the top 30 contestants in Popstars: The Rivals, a competition to form a boy band.

Shayne Ward competed in the 2005 edition of Simon Cowell's UK talent competition The X Factor. He became the oddsmakers' choice to win the competition. Louis Walsh was Shayne Ward's mentor during the contest. His final challenger was 41-year-old former garbageman Andy Abraham. Shayne Ward won the final vote by just over 1% of over 10 million votes cast.

Shayne Ward's first single "That's My Goal" was released in the UK on December 21, 2005. It sold 313,000 copies on its first day in release. This made it the 3rd fastest selling single in the UK ever behind only Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana "Candle In the Wind" and Will Young's "Evergreen," his first single after winning Pop Idol. "That's My Goal" easily outdistanced the competition to become the Christmas #1 for 2005 in the UK.
