Monday morning, July 25th, MTV announced the nominations for 2005's 22nd annual Video Music Awards. Green Day carted off the most nominations with 7 for "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and 1 for "American Idiot" - a total of 8 nominations. Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott followed with 6 nominations each. U2 took 5 nominations and My Chemical Romance took 4.
MTV also announced that P. Diddy will be the host for the award extravaganza that will take place Sunday, August 28th in Miami. As took place last year, the galaxy of music stars will arrive via luxury yachts. For the first time, the musical score for the event will be written specifically for the Video Music Awards. This year's composer is Lil' Jon, and it will be produced by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda. Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay, 50 Cent, Green Day, the Killers, Ludacris, Shakira, and Kanye West have all been confirmed as performers for the event. Rihanna, Fall Out Boy, and a trio of Houston MCs: Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Slim Thug, will perform in an awards pre-show.
The nominees for Video of the Year ranged across a wide spectrum of music. The nominees are:

- Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
- Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl
- Kanye West - Jesus Walks
- Snoop Dogg with Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot
