Monday morning, July 31, 2006, MTV announced the nominations for 2006's 23rd annual Video Music Awards. Shakira and Red Hot Chili Peppers carted off the most nominations with 7 each. Madonna and Panic! At the Disco followed with 5 nominations each. Christina Aguilera is nominated for 4 awards.
This year's awards ceremony will take place August 31, 2006 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, a shift from the past 2 years in Miami, Florida. For the first time in the history of the awards, viewers will be allowed to vote in all of the major award categories. Panic! At the Disco, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, T.I., Ludacris, and the Killers have all been confirmed as performers for the event.
The nominees for Video of the Year ranged across a wide spectrum of music. The nominees are:
- Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man
- Madonna - Hung Up
- Panic! At the Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California
- Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie
