Born January 11, 1971, in New York City, Mary J. Blige was named by ​Billboard magazine in 2010 as the most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years. Beginning her solo career in 1992 under the direction of Uptown Records president Andre Harrell and A&R Director Sean "Puffy Combs, she has sold over 50 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide and won nine Grammy Awards. She has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Sting, U2, Elton John, George Michael, Maroon 5, Andrea Bocelli, Jay-Z, Nas, 50 Cent, Common, Lil Wayne, T.I., Drake, and Trey Songz,

On February 11, 2007, Mary J. Blige won Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "Be Without You" at the 49th annual Grammy Awards held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. She also won Best R&B Album for The Breakthrough. "Be Without You" was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It was certified triple platinum and was Blige's fifth number one single on the Billboard R&B chart. The song also won four Billboard Music Awards, including  R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year.
