Just a week ago Mariah Carey took home an armload of Vibe Awards, but at the 2005 American Music Awards she took home only one - Favorite R&B Artist. Destiny's Child were big winners by taking home 2 awards even though they are no longer officially in existence as a group. A solo Kelly Rowland accepted the award poignantly thanking her previous partners Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams.

Other moments of interest included Gwen Stefani rushing from her performance with Pharrell to accept Favorite Pop Female and not knowing which award she had won. Jokes were made about 50 Cent's tough thug background, and a large number of winners were not present. One of the performance highlights was Cyndi Lauper's stunning duet with Sarah McLachlan on the classic "Time After Time."
