The MTV Video Music Awards were established in 1984 to celebrate the best in music video. Since that time the event has emerged as one of the three most important pop music awards ceremonies in the US.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place Sunday, September 13, 2009. The show was broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Sunday, September 13, 2009 beginning at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Comedian Russell Brand hosted the ceremonies. Special presentations of trailers for the Michael Jackson: This Is It and Twilight: New Moon movies took place. Janet Jackson performed in a tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson.

A significant controversy in the night occurred when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's award acceptance speech for Best Female Video. A wide variety of those in attendance and elsewhere headed to Twitter to express their opinion of the events.
