Early Life and Music Experience:
27 year old Matt Cardle, winner of the seventh UK season of X Factor, grew up in Essex, England. He was a victim of cancer of the kidneys as an infant which required the removal of one kidney at age 2. He worked a wide range of jobs while doggedly pursuing a music career. His most recent employment has been as a painter while fronting the band Seven Summers who released a self-titled debut album in January 2010.
'X Factor' Contestant:
Matt Cardle auditioned for X Factor in 2010 singing the Amy Winehouse song "You Know I'm No Good." During the intense bootcamp segment he sang a powerful version of Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." When the show extended the boys group to include those 28 and under, Matt Cardle ended up with Dannii Minogue as mentor instead of landing in the usual 25 and over group. As the season progressed, Matt Cardle began to be viewed as a favorite to win the competition. He headed into the final as the betting favorite across the UK.
