In its 11th incarnation, Lollapalooza is looking to become the largest music festival in the United States. This year's event will feature 130 acts on 8 stages over 3 days in Grant Park on the Chicago, Illinois lakefront. In 2005 over 65,000 music fans attended. Organizers are hoping for an even larger crowd this year. Check out the listing of key performers below.
The first Lollapalooza (the term means something "outstanding or unusual" and reportedly was first heard in a Three Stooges film) was put together by Perry Farrell, leader of the alt-rock band Jane's Addiction. It was conceived as a sort of modern-day Chautauqua traveling from city to city and including instructional and informational shows and exhibits in addition to concert performances. Lollapalooza thrived as a tour for much of the early 1990's but eventually closed due to declining ticket sales and controversy over the appropriate direction for the tour. Lollapalooza has been revived as a destination concert and this year's festival in Chicago, Illinois promises to be the largest yet.
