Grammy Award

Wednesday, February 8, 2005 the 2006 Grammy Awards will be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The ceremonies will be broadcast live on CBS Television at 8 p.m. EST. The nominees are voted on and winners selected by members of the Recording Academy.

The Grammy Awards give out over 100 different trophies. These are my predictions in the general and pop music categories.

General

Record of the Year

  • Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together"
  • Gorillaz - "Feel Good, Inc."
  • Green Day - "Boulevard of Broken Dreams
  • Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl"
  • Kanye West - "Gold Digger"

The Record of the Year category has a particularly strong field this year. 4 of the 5 nominees hit #1 on the pop singles chart. I give the lean to Mariah Carey. Everyone loves a pheomenal comeback story.

Album of the Year

  • Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi
  • Paul McCartney - Chaos and Creation in the Backyard
  • Gwen Stefani - Love, Angel, Music, Baby
  • U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
  • Kanye West - Late Registration

This is a difficult category to call. Sentimentality would favor Paul McCartney who will perform at the ceremony for the first time ever this year. Artistic considerations would seem to favor Kanye West, but his ego just might get between association members and their votes. I give it to perennial Grammy favorites U2 emerging from a very close race.

Song of the Year

  • Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together"
  • John Legend - "Ordinary People"
  • Rascal Flatts - "Bless the Broken Road"
  • Bruce Springsteen - "Devils & Dust"
  • U2 - "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own"

While John Legend will make a strong run in this category, I give the nod to Mariah Carey's hit. The association voters don't often split the Record of the Year and Song of the Year winners.

Best New Artist

  • Ciara
  • Fall Out Boy
  • Keane
  • John Legend
  • SugarLand

While I would personally lean toward Fall Out Boy, I don't believe they have any chance to win. I'll give this category to John Legend in a squeaker over the Country voting bloc's favorite SugarLand.
