Pop Categories

Grammy Award

Sunday, February 11, 2007 the Grammy Awards will be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The ceremonies will be broadcast live on CBS Television at 8 p.m. EST. The nominees are voted on and winners selected by members of the Recording Academy.

The Grammy Awards give out over 100 different trophies. These are my predictions in the general and pop music categories.

General

Record of the Year

  • Mary J. Blige - "Be Without You"
  • James Blunt - "You're Beautiful"
  • Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice"
  • Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"
  • Corinne Bailey Rae - "Put Your Records On"

This looks like a very tight category. Mary J. Blige has momentum from leading the field in nominations, but "You're Beautiful" will appeal strongly to the more conservative voters while "Put Your Records On" may get the votes of those eager to crown a promising new talent. I will give the edge to "You're Beautiful."

Album of the Year

  • Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way
  • Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
  • John Mayer - Continuum
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
  • Justin Timberlake - FutureSex / LoveSounds

In an unusual turn of events, Red Hot Chili Peppers, as the senior artists, would have to be considered the sentimental favorite in this category. I'll agree with sentimentality and give the edge to RHCP.

Song of the Year

  • Mary J. Blige - "Be Without You"
  • Carrie Underwood - "Jesus, Take the Wheel"
  • Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice"
  • Corinne Bailey Rae - "Put Your Records On"
  • James Blunt - "You're Beautiful"

Again, I'll give the nod to "You're Beautiful," but "Put Your Records On" could pull a surprise.

Best New Artist

  • James Blunt
  • Chris Brown
  • Imogen Heap
  • Corinne Bailey Rae
  • Carrie Underwood

She has swept up a tremendous number of awards already in the past few months, and I think Carrie Underwood will cart home this trophy as well.
