Sunday, February 10, 2008, the Grammy Awards will be presented live in Los Angeles, California. The ceremonies will be broadcast live on CBS Television at 8 p.m. EST. The nominees are voted on and winners selected by members of the Recording Academy.
The Grammy Awards give out over 100 different trophies. These are my predictions in the general and pop music categories.
General
Record of the Year
- Beyonce - "Irreplaceable"
- Foo Fighters - "The Pretender"
- Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - "Umbrella"
- Justin Timberlake - "What Goes Around...Comes Around"
- Amy Winehouse - "Rehab"
For much of the year I would have given the edge to Amy Winehouse. However, I think that her ongoing personal issues have dulled a bit of the shine of "Rehab." I give the edge to "Umbrella" as a hit that simply dares you to not sing along.
Album of the Year
- Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
- Vince Gill - These Days
- Herbie Hancock - River: The Joni Letters
- Kanye West - Graduation
- Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Kanye West has been nominated for Album of the Year for all 3 of his albums. The first 2 times he did not win. I believe the Grammy Awards will finally give Kanye clear bragging rights this year.
Song of the Year
- Plain White T's - "Hey There Delilah"
- Corinne Bailey Rae - "Like a Star"
- Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - "Umbrella"
- Carrie Underwood - "Before He Cheats"
- Amy Winehouse - "Rehab"
"Umbrella" is easily the most frequently covered song of the year. I think it will win the award, but look for both "Rehab" and "Hey There Delilah" to give it a run for the top.
Best New Artist
- Feist
- Ledisi
- Paramore
- Taylor Swift
- Amy Winehouse
While she is not really new, the complicated Grammy rules allow Feist to compete in this category. Her single "1,2,3,4" is absolutely charming to a very wide range of Grammy voters. I look for Feist to walk away with this prize.
