Grammy Award

Sunday, February 18, 2009, the Grammy Awards will be presented live in Los Angeles, California. The ceremonies will be broadcast live on CBS Television at 8 p.m. EST. For the 6th year, the awards are being presented at the Staples Center. The nominees are voted on and winners selected by members of the Recording Academy.

The Grammy Awards give out over 100 different trophies. These are my predictions in the general and pop music categories.

General

Record of the Year

  • Adele - "Chasing Pavements"
  • Coldplay - "Viva La Vida"
  • Leona Lewis - "Bleeding Love"
  • M.I.A. - "Paper Planes"
  • Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - "Please Read the Letter"

Leona Lewis' huge smash "Bleeding Love" looks like the elegant mainstream recording Grammy voters often love. However, I'm going to go with M.I.A.'s breakthrough in part for the extra exposure it is receiving as a key element of the soundtrack for the 10 time Academy Award nominated film Slumdog Millionaire.

Album of the Year

  • Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends
  • Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
  • Ne-Yo - Year Of the Gentleman
  • Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows

There are few things Grammy likes better than two legends joining forces successfully. Coldplay's album is a popular favorite, but I am going with Plant & Krauss here.

Song of the Year

  • Estelle featuring Kanye West - "American Boy"
  • Adele - "Chasing Pavements"
  • Jason Mraz - "I'm Yours"
  • Sara Bareilles - "Love Song"
  • Coldplay - "Viva La Vida"

This is a category in which I think Coldplay will take home the award. Lyrically, "Viva La Vida" is a towering achievement and the band's best song yet in a very very impressive resume.

Best New Artist

  • Adele
  • Duffy
  • Jonas Brothers
  • Lady Antebellum
  • Jazmine Sullivan

It's a real horse race here, but I think Duffy will ultimately win out due to the consistent quality of her debut album. She is a talent with huge potential for the future.
