Top 10 New Pop Christmas Albums 2012

Each year brings a new crop of holiday albums by a wide range of artists. This year there are new collections from top country artists, classic pop artists, and current stars.

The list of performers leans to the alternative side of the musical spectrum, but these charming versions of holiday classics will appeal to most pop fans. Breakout act fun. kicks off the collection with a thoroughly contemporary update on the classic "Sleigh Ride." This is likely to be a holiday album treasured for years to come.

2. Lady Antebellum - On This Winter's Night

All three of Lady Antebellum's non-holiday studio albums have been certified platinum, and the two most recent reached #1 on the album chart. Two years ago they released their first holiday collection, a Target exclusive EP titled A Merry Little Christmas. On This Winter's Night is their first full-length Christmas album. The title cut is an original song by the group, but most of the rest of the album is Lady Antebellum versions of Christmas classics.

3. Rod Stewart - Merry Christmas, Baby

Legendary pop singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Rod Stewart is releasing his first holiday collection. David Foster is producer and arranger for the album. Among the guest performers are Mary J. Blige, Michael Buble, and Cee-Lo Green. The album includes one original song, "Red-Suited Super Man," while the other tracks are a wide ranging collection of holiday classics.

4. Blake Shelton - Cheers, It's Christmas

This seventh studio album from country star and The Voice mentor Blake Shelton is his first Christmas collection. Guest artists include Michael Buble, Kelly Clarkson, and Shelton's wife, country star Miranda Lambert. The album is balanced between a handful of new songs and a strong selection of traditional favorites.

5. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - This Christmas

Pop singer Olivia Newton-John has released three solo albums of Christmas music.

In stores November 13, 2012. She first collaborated with John Travolta in the massive hit musical film Grease. One of the songs "I Think You Might Like It" is being touted as a sequel of sorts to the #1 hit from Grease "You're the One That I Want." The album is being promoted as the equivalent of an old-fashioned TV holiday special. All proceeds from the album will be donated to charity, and it includes guest appearances from Barbra Streisand and James Taylor.

6. Tracey Thorn - Tinsel and Lights

Everything But the Girl's Tracey Thorn possesses one of the most haunting voices in popular music. Her first holiday collection includes a wide range of covers of seasonal songs by alternative artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Ron Sexsmith, and White Stripes. She also covers Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas" and Joni Mitchell's "River." Sprinkled in are a few traditional holiday favorites as well.

Colbie Caillat has reached the top 10 with all three of her studio albums, and she has become a staple on adult pop radio. She says that her first Christmas album is an album for those who don't celebrate a traditional kind of Christmas. She says, "Not everyone lives in the snow or cold places for Christmas, so why don't we write some songs for them to be able to relate to what their Christmas is like." Her album includes five original songs and 10 holiday classics. Gavin DeGraw and Brad Paisley guest on the album.

Teen country singer Scotty McCreery was the winner of American Idol in 2011. His debut album Clear As Day reached #1 and has been certified platinum. Christmas With Scotty McCreery is his second studio album. It includes two new songs and nine holiday classics.

Christian metalcore band August Burns Red have climbed higher in the charts with each successive album release. The 2011 album Leveler reached #11 on the overall album chart while topping both the Christian and hard rock charts. The new Christmas album Sleddin' Hill is all instrumental and includes a wide range of influences on the group's music.

10. Christina Perri - A Very Merry Perri Christmas

Christina Perri's debut album lovestrong hit the top 5 of the album chart after her single "Jar Of Hearts" peaked at #17 and was certified triple platinum. A Very Merry Perri Christmas is an EP of holiday music. The new song "Something About December" is matched with five classic songs.
