Guide Review - Katy Perry - "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
It is hard to decide if "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" is intended as a first cousin to Katy Perry's hit single "Waking Up In Vegas" or if it is more like a tribute to Ke$ha depicting the day after "Tik Tok." Either way the song is likely to be embraced quickly by weekend revelers.
The unmistakable musical stamps of producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin are all over this song. Musically, it is relentlessly perky and upbeat. It all lands in the middle of a singalong chorus. There is a dose of cheerleader rock in the bridge that leads into a saxophone solo and a reprise of the chorus. As with so many other pop hits produced by one or both Dr. Luke and Max Martin, this one will instantly burrow into your mind and you won't forget it soon.
Lady Gaga may grab the headlines, but Katy Perry is not far behind in commercial success. She outstrips Lady Gaga's number ones by a count of five to three. Katy Perry's success comes with good reason. Her lyrics never fail to be clever. There is tremendous tongue in cheek humor here whether mentioning Ke$ha's ever-present glitter or detailing just what a mess the Friday night was, if only it could really be remembered. The chirpy upbeat songs make even the most concerning of party behaviors sound like a walk in the park. Don't miss Katy Perry on tour this summer. "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" is sure to have a key featured role.
