Mariah Carey was born March 27, 1970 in Long Island, New York. Her mother Patricia Carey is Irish-American and her father Alfred Roy Carey is of mixed heritage with a Black mother and a Venezuelan father.
Her parents divorced when Mariah was three years old. She was raised by her mother. She has both an older sister, Alison, who is 8 years older than Mariah and a brother, Morgan, who is 9 years older.
According to Mariah, her mother discovered she had a gifted voice as a toddler. Mariah Carey began singing at the age of 4 and by junior high was writing her own songs.
After high school graduation, she moved into New York City, slept on the floor in a shared apartment, and worked a wide range of jobs from coat check to part-time backup singer. 10 months later she met Tommy Mottola, and the rest...is history.
