These are the hottest 10 pop songs of the week as determined by About Top 40. This chart is compiled consulting data from various music industry charts and sources. It is intended to indicate the hottest rising hits. Recordings that have reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart are disqualified from this chart.

1. Avicii - "Wake Me Up"

Sweden's Tim Bergling, aka Avicii, has one of the biggest worldwide pop hits of the year in "Wake Me Up." It has reached #1 in countries from Australia to Turkey. In the US the song has reached the top 10 on the dance club songs chart and is rapidly turning into a major pop hit. It will be included on Avicii's debut studio album True due in stores September 17, 2013.

2. Lorde - "Royals"

This week 16 year old Lorde became the first female solo artist to top the alternative songs chart in the US in 17 years. "Royals" is also a #1 alternative hit in Canada. It will be included on Lorde's debut studio album Pure Heroine which is expected in stores in late September.

3. Lana Del Rey - "Summertime Sadness"

"Summertime Sadness" is one notch away from becoming Lana Del Rey's highest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100. Its success is fueled by an impressive dance remix of the somber song. "Summertime Sadness" is a top 10 pop hit single in at least 10 different countries around the world.

4. Katy Perry - "Roar"

Katy Perry is introducing her upcoming studio album Prism with the single "Roar." It is a logical progression from previous singles and depicts the singer as ready to move forward in her life with a "roar." The song has become an instant hit both in sales and mainstream pop radio airplay.

5. Justin Timberlake - "Take Back the Night"

"Take Back the Night" is the first single from the second half of Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience album project. It is heavily influenced by late 1970s and early 1980s soul. The song has climbed into the top 10 on the R&B songs chart.

6. Lady Gaga - "Applause"

Lady Gaga's first single from the upcoming Artpop project was not expected to be released until next week, but it got rushed out after unauthorized leaks began. That will mean the song will be pitted directly against Katy Perry's new "Roar" in the first week of release for both singles.

7. Drake - "Hold On We're Going Home"

Drake shifts direction from his recent hip hop hits on this new single. "Hold On We're Going Home" features him singing with an 80s soul inspired backing track. The song will be included on Drake's upcoming third studio album Nothing Was the Same. His first two studio albums both hit #1 on the album chart and have been certified platinum.

8. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - "Same Love" featuring Mary Lambert

"Same Love" was a #1 pop hit single for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis in both Australia and New Zealand. With a political agenda as the primary motivation, "Same Love" is a rarity among current pop hits. It is the third big pop hit single by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis this year.

9. AWOLNATION - "Sail"

AWOLNATION was formed by Aaron Bruno who was previously a member of a number of other bands. The group's debut album Megalithic Symphony was released in early 2011. The single "Sail" has been present on a variety of charts ever since. It reached the top 5 on both the rock and alternative songs charts. The group has followed with two more top 10 alternative songs hits.

10. Bonnie McKee - "American Girl"

Bonnie McKee has co-written a series of hit songs by other artists including Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Taio Cruz. Now she is moving to the front of the stage as a solo artist. A solo album is expected later this year.
