Spice Girls

Then...and Now

By

The Spice Girls were one of the world's most successful recording acts of the late 1990's. Geri Halliwell left the group in 1998, but the remaining 4 did not officially break up until early 2001. Almost since the breakup was announced, reunion rumors have swirled. The group announced in the summer of 2007 that they would reunite for a concert tour at the end of the year.

This is a look at the group and the individual members back in their peak years and where they are in 2007.

Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, was always a magnet for media attention. However, she was the only one of the Spice Girls to not have a solo on their breakthrough single "Wannabe." As the group continued performing and recording, she received more acclaim for her vocal talents. The media nickname Posh originated from Beckham's elegant bearing and penchant for stylish clothes.

When the group first hit the charts, Victoria Beckham was Victoria Adams. She began dating football star David Beckham in 1997, and they were married July 4, 1999.

Victoria Beckham's solo musical career began quickly with 4 consecutive top 10 singles and a top 10 album. However, a second solo album never materialized and Beckham's musical career eventually fell apart. She has gained significant success in the fashion world. Victoria Beckham has rarely been out of the tabloid spotlight due to her high profile marriage to David Beckham. Reportedly, she will be helping put together a TV reality series about her move to America brought about by her husband's signing to a Los Angeles based soccer team.

Melanie Brown became the subject of tabloid scrutiny when her marriage fell apart in 2000. She released her first solo album Hot in 2000. It included 2 top 10 pop singles, but a second album flopped and Brown never returned to the top 10. Melanie Brown had some minor acting success, but she landed in the tabloids again with rumors of a relationship with Eddie Murphy. According to some sources, she is planning a serious musical comeback in 2008.

Bunton had some experience in television acting before joining the Spice Girls. Emma Bunton was a replacement for Michelle Stephenson who was a member of the group when they were known as Touch. She did not release a solo album until 2001 after the group's breakup had been announced.
