Shakira is one of the top pop stars in the world popular with both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking audiences. Her first few Colombian albums, of primarily local interest and difficult to obtain, have been excluded from this discography.
Shakira casts a wider musical net here ranging from Middle Eastern influences to rock. It became her first #1 Latin pop album, an accomplishment each Spanish-language album since has reached, and included 5 top 10 Latin pop singles. "Tu" and "Ciega Sordomuda" were both #1 hits.

Shakira reached out to English-speaking audiences with her first album recorded in English, and it was a rousing success. The album reached #3 in the U.S. and included two top 10 hit singles "Whenever, Wherever," and "Underneath Your Clothes." The album also includes an English translation of her earlier hit "Ojos Asi." Shakira sacrificed nothing in intensity or quality of music to bring her talents to new audiences.

After 4 years without a new studio release, Shakira decided to package her latest work in two separate collections. This first volume is entirely in Spanish and is a triumph. The album was an instant smash and included "La Tortura," one of the biggest Latin pop hits of all time.

Shakira's second English-language studio album is one of her greatest artistic triumphs. It is much more than simply a pop album and includes artistically challenging music and lyrics. Commercially, the album was less successful than Laundry Service, but the inclusion of a new single "Hips Don't Lie" turned it into a major hit all over again five months after the album's initial release.
