The Bottom Line
Mike Posner certainly has a way with a pop melody and sweet vocals to match. However, in this follow-up to the stunning top 10 smash "Cooler Than Me," the recording is so cluttered with electronic effects it threatens to drown the gentle, almost shy, spirit of the song. Mike Posner's approach to a song is not nearly as bombastic as much of current hit dance pop music. The production of his recordings should take that into account and enhance the pleasureable gifts in his performance.
Pros
- Sweet, vulnerable song
- Mike Posner's intimate vocals
Cons
- Too many electronic effects in the mix
- Melody too often obscured in the recording
Description
- Written by Mike Posner and Benjamin Levin

Guide Review - Mike Posner - "Please Don't Go"
At the core of this mix is a sweet song about a man desperate to keep his love from running away. However, electronic effects seem piled on top in an attempt to bolster the recording. It is almost as if Mike Posner is lacking in confidence that his song can carry its own weight. The gentleness and pleading are quite enough to carry "Please Don't Go" without resorting to a fuzzed up bass line and constrant electronic squiggles.
Much of Mike Posner's initial success came through acclaim from the hip hop community. However, his first two hit singles show that the heart of a pop singer-songwriter beats in his chest. He takes the stance of the romantic underdog. In a quiet moment, it just might be that underdog that ultimately wins in the relationship sweepstakes. However, he won't be fully revealed if the sweet voice is buried in the mix.
Mike Posner is one of the top pop breakout artists of 2010. His gift is that he knows how to write a pop song expressing the intimate, vulnerable side of a man trying to make his way in relationship to the opposite gender. However, his music might be even more affecting if he could tone down the effort to clutter his recordings with contemporary studio electronics. That said, "Please Don't Go" is a sweet song that is easy to listen to for most pop music fans.
