The Bottom Line
While it isn't their best and there is little new musical ground broken here, "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" accomplishes two important feats. It signals that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with their rock and funk commitments intact, and it introduces us to new lead guitar player Josh Klinghoffer. The lyrics hint at a range of sexual adventures of "Rain Dance Maggie" while the Red Hot Chili Peppers mine 70s era Rolling Stones music for a slightly raunchy, funky feel for this first single from the I'm With You album. It is a welcome return by one of the world's top rock bands.

- Stripped down funky rock feel
- Solid, singalong chorus
- Misses anything epic in sound
- Written by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Guide Review - Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers - "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie"
It has been over five years since the release of Stadium Arcadium, the last studio album from Red Hot Chili Peppers. That is the longest gap between new albums in the band's nearly 30 year history. During that time not only did guitarist John Frusciante depart for a second time, but also bass player Flea has indicated he nearly left as well. The band spent two years on a self-imposed hiatus and decided to return and record once again. For the first single "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" the band trims down any stadium rock feel for a more intimate, funky sound. This allows us to revel in the groove of Flea's bass kicking off the song and the charm of Anthony Kiedis' ad-libbed vocals as the song fades along side drummer Chad Smith's extended cowbell work.
"The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" features a strong solo from new lead guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. He was no stranger to the band having been a long time friend of John Frusciante. Instead of virtuoso runs, the guitar solo at the heart of the song consists more of noisy coaxing of a sensuous rock voice from the instrument. Josh Klinghoffer's work seems to help ground the band in a more earthy, sensual sound.
Will "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" be a pop hit? Radio programmers should be listening. The song would add a much needed funky rock balance to current playlists. The singalong friendly chorus will appeal to a wide range of pop fans. Red Hot Chili Peppers provide a solid preview here of the album I'm With You and a solid addition to the band in Josh Klinghoffer.
